1/2 c sugar 1/4 c cornstarch
1/2 tsp salt 4 c milk
4 egg yolks, slightly beaten 2 T butter
2 tsp vanilla
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually stir in milk. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickend and bubbly. Reduce heat; cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat.
Stir 1/2 of hot milk mixture into egg yolk, stirring constantly. Return all to the milk mixture pan, stirring constantly. Bring to a gentle boil and stir 1 minute longer. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla.
Cool for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Transfer to dessert dishes or custard cups. Cover and refrigerate.
